Virtual Reality Wholesomeness

This study focuses on a genre that has become increasingly popular in the gaming world: wholesome games. While there is no single explanation of what this wholesomeness entails, it is generally agreed upon that wholesome games should primarily promote uplifting/positive themes in it's story and/or setting, amongst other aspects. This project was particularly inspired by the overwhelming success of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. This is also a wholesome game, released March 20th 2020 and praised by critics for being ''the perfect game for the perfect time''.

For this project, a demo for a Virtual Reality game has been developed, trying to make it as wholesome as possible. The game is targeted to people who suffer from being at home for an extended period of time due to self-quarantine.

Learning points


Passion project
I would perhaps go as far to say that my Final Bachelor Project was like a passion project. This was primarily in terms of the skills I got to use or learn fully. I have had difficulties fitting certain skills into projects. However, because I did so many things in terms of those skills in this project, I felt that I never really reached a certain deepness with my project.
Virtual Reality
This project was the first time I developed for VR. From past projects, I learned that it was absolutely vital to begin on time and keep your product simple. As such, I followed my own advice and managed to finish the VR demo on time.
User research
What I would do differently next time is definitely starting earlier with carrying out user tests and research. I originally wanted to start much earlier than I did in the end. I was mainly held back by the thought of the ERB form. However, in hindsight, this was not necerray.
